BLACK. PRINTED. SMART.
Next-Generation Printable Black Electrochromic Film for Automotive Glass
Our Product
BLACK. PRINTED. SMART.
A printable black electrochromic film developed by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) switches from transparent to deep black at about 1.5 V. The water-based nanoparticle ink enables simple, vacuum-free coating.

Description of the products
Glass That Adapts to Sunlight on Demand.
AIST's proprietary water-based nanoparticle ink technology, for which patent applications have been filed, enables fabrication without vacuum deposition and is compatible with existing coating and printing equipment, with potential for roll-to-roll production of large-area films. Other smart-window approaches often involve trade-offs in color, transparency, power use or manufacturing complexity.
AIST differentiates its technology by combining deep-black appearance, low-voltage operation, energy efficiency and scalable coating-based manufacturing.
Its integrated expertise spans material design, nanoparticle synthesis, ink formulation, coating, film formation and device design for smart glass use.

AIST is developing this technology for automotive sunroofs, side windows and partitions, where switching from transparency to deep black can improve privacy, reduce glare and solar heat gain, and expand design freedom.
This patented heat‑management design resolves conventional heat‑balance issues and substantially improves profitability, especially where labor and transport costs account for nearly 70% of total biochar production expenses. By enabling autonomous, distributed carbonization of unused biomass directly at forestry and agricultural sites, Pyro‑X accelerates the formation of a decentralized biochar economy while supporting carbon sequestration, soil regeneration, and sustainable resource management.

A one-square-meter printed film has demonstrated switching within 60 seconds at about 1.5 V. By limiting solar heat entering a vehicle, the film can help reduce the air-conditioning load; its low-voltage operation and memory characteristics are particularly relevant to EVs.
Because the electrochromic material is formulated as a water-based nanoparticle ink, it can be applied through coating and printing rather than vacuum deposition, supporting large-area and continuous production.

About Us
Advanced Control of Heat Transfer with Understanding the Phenomenon from both Theoretical and Experimental Perspectives for Effective Use of Thermal Energy
Technologies for optimal heat control still have a way to go compared to electricity. This area is promising from both academic and engineering perspectives. Thermal energy often goes to waste and is released to the environment unused. We are conducting a wide range of research on thermal energy technologies to utilize smartly heat, including “Mottainai” waste heat. By fully utilizing heat, we will help promote the efficient use of energy.
